Eric Foner

We've just learned about another educational opportunity from one of Columbia's own, Eric Foner. Professor Foner is the DeWitt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia University. He has authored or edited over twenty books. His publications have concentrated on the intersections of intellectual, political and social history and the history of American race relations. His most recent book, The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery (2010), was awarded the Bancroft Prize, Pulitzer Prize for History, and The Lincoln Prize. Professor Foner is teaching A New Birth of Freedom: The Civil War, 1861-1865 which narrates the history of the American Civil War. The focus is less on the battlefield than on political, social, and economic change in the Union and the Confederacy. The course can be accessed for free on the EdX platform.
